Series: Apprenticeship to Jesus
Text: John 21:15-19
Title: Doing as Jesus Did
Invited: Share a story of when you were given a second chance, or perhaps a story of you giving someone else a second chance.
Shaped:
- Talk about how this conversation in John 21 represents a shift for Peter into a new stage of apprenticeship to Jesus.
- John 21 isn’t the only commissioning passage for Jesus’ apprentices. Read also Matthew 28:16-20; John 20:21-23; and Acts 1:8. Jesus was God, and we’re not. How is it possible for us to “do as Jesus did”?
- In Practicing the Way, John Mark Comer offers questions to frame the apprenticeship task of “doing as Jesus did.” Reflect on them together – how are they helpful? “What would Jesus do if he were me? How would Jesus live if he had my gender, place, personality profile, age, life stage, job, resources, and address? How would he show up to the world? How would he handle ___?” (p.123)
Loved: Thomas Kelly writes, “The Loving Presence does not burden us equally with all things, but considerately puts upon each of us just a few central tasks, as emphatic responsibilities. For each of us these special undertakings are our share in the joyous burdens of love. We cannot die on every cross, nor are we expected to” (Comer, p.151). What is a “joyful burden of love” that you have been given to do as Jesus’ apprentice? Perhaps you need help to answer this question – ask a family member, a friend, or your LIFE Group to speak encouragement into your life. How do they see you already living out your task of living as Jesus did?
Sent to live like Jesus:
- How could you lean one step further into apprenticeship to Jesus this week?
- Pray for one another for the courage, humility, and perseverance to carry out the steps you’ve identified. Or, if you’re on your own, pray for God’s presence and power in your life, and pray for our Faith family to be effective apprentices.
- This fall we at Faith are promoting several small-group communities to support you in your work of apprenticeship to Jesus: GEMS, Boys Club, Youth Group; LIFE Groups; Faithwalking; Dunamis; and Coffee Break (more info in our Friday newsletter). Which of these have you chosen?
