Sermon Questions – March 16, 2025
Series: The Gospel of John: Living your Best Life
Text: John 3:1-21
Title: Being Born When You’re Old
1. Opening: Share about a time when you did something memorable in the middle of the night.
2. What can we learn about Nicodemus from his interaction with Jesus? How are you like or unlike him, particularly in your relationship with Jesus?
3. In John 3:14-15, Jesus connects his death by crucifixion to the story of the bronze serpent in the wilderness (Numbers 21:4-9). Does this connection help you make sense of Jesus’ redemptive work? Can you think of other Old Testament stories that provide a parallel to or a foreshadowing of Jesus’ redemptive work? (e.g., I think of the story in Genesis 22.)
4. Describe in your own words: what does it mean to be “born again” or “born from above”? Then share: have you experienced this transformation? If yes, talk about the difference it makes in your life. If not, what questions do you have?
5. In our winter sermon series, Witness: Equipped to Share the Good News, this passage about Nicodemus was used in the fourth lesson, Participate (which we didn’t explore together due to a cancelled worship service). How does Jesus invite Nicodemus to “participate” in life with Jesus? If you followed the Witness series, consider talking as a group about where things are at for you several weeks after the series has ended. Discuss how you might be able to invite someone in your life to “participate,” to take a next step with Jesus – either socially or spiritually.
