Preaching Team Series: Everyday Stories for Everyday People
Matthew 20:1-16, “The Generous Landowner”
1. Opening: Talk about jobs – e.g., your first job ever, your first job for pay, your favourite job.
2. Why are the workers who were hired first upset? Brainstorm some current-day examples of this sense of offense. Have you ever personally felt this way in your church, home, or work life?
3. Is God fair? (You might want to read or skim Romans 3:9-28; 5:1-11.)
4. How have you experienced or witnessed God’s generosity and grace?
5. Perhaps the landowner offers the people work not because he needs help but because they need a meaningful purpose. Christians celebrate life with Jesus beyond the grave, but what is good, already in this life, about living in God’s kingdom and being part of his family?
6. Are you praying for someone who has not yet accepted God’s invitation to work in his vineyard?
7. What is one thing you can do this week to live in alignment with God’s grace and generosity?
