Sermon Questions for Reflection and/or Discussion, June 1, 2025
Text: Acts 1:1-11
Title: Ascension Longing and Legacy
1. Opening: Share about the service projects you participated in today. What was a highlight? Or if you did not participate, share one way you serve in a different aspect of your life, and something you enjoy about it.
2. Imagine how the disciples are feeling as they watch Jesus ascend into heaven (v.9-11). Do you feel the same or different, when you think about Jesus sitting at God’s right hand in heaven? Why?
3. Jesus told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for “the gift my Father promises,” (v.4), “power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (v.8). This gift is received ten days later on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-21). Is there still a place in the Christian life for waiting? Why and how? How might these stories of Ascension and Pentecost shape our waiting?
4. Discuss this quote by St. Teresa of Avila. How does it make you feel? How might it shape your behaviour? Did it shape your service project today? “Christ has no body on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassionately on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours!”
5. We continue to be in the season of the “Thirsty for the Spirit” sermon series. What is one way you might cultivate a thirst for the Holy Spirit this week?
