Sermon Questions 2025-10-19

Sermon Questions – October 19, 2025
Series: The Book of James: Faith in Action
Text: James 3: 1-12
Title: Wisdom for Speaking

Invited: Share an example of words, either positive or negative, that you remember long after they were spoken. Discuss why they were so memorable.

Shaped:

  • James 3:2 says, “If you could find someone whose speech was perfectly true, you’d have a perfect person, in perfect control of life” (Message). Discuss.
  • James compares the tongue to a bit and bridle, a rudder, a flame, and an untamed creature. Think about your speech. Which of James’s metaphors resonates most with you (or convicts you most), and why?
  • On the topic of using our tongues, James gives more warning than wisdom, especially in chapter 3. What has helped you to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry” (James 1:19)? What truth from elsewhere in Scripture could help?
  • What might it look like in one’s life to “humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you” (James 1:21)? (Luke 6:43-45 might help.)

Loved: Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in baskets of silver” (ESV). Who might benefit from a “word fitly spoken” (or written) from you in the coming week?

Sent to live like Jesus: What is one thing that the Holy Spirit is saying to you today? Share it with your group or at least one other person, and then pray together for the Spirit’s love and power to respond well.
