Series: The Book of James: Faith in Action
Text: James 1:9-11; 1:27-2:17; 5:1-6
Title: Wisdom for Wealth
Invited: Pastor Cara described entering the Rogers Centre as “a different world.” What’s a place that you have experienced as “a different world”?
Loved: When have you felt loved by someone who is either much wealthier than you or much poorer than you in the eyes of the world (i.e., financially)?
Shaped:
- Skim the passages listed: how does James describe the rich? the poor? How is James’ characterization of rich and poor similar to or different from the world we live in?
- Are you rich or poor? Explain.
- Pastor Cara describes the “kingdom [God] promised those who love him” (2:5) as a different world marked by (1) generosity, (2) working for justice, and (3) transformative relationships. Share examples of where you’ve caught glimpses of each of these aspects of God’s kingdom – in the Bible, in the Church at large, and/or in your own life.
- As you think about James’ teaching about wealth, what most convicts you? What is one step you can take to enter further into God’s different world?
Sent to live like Jesus: What is one thing that the Holy Spirit is saying to you today? Share it with your group or at least one other person, and then pray together for the Spirit’s love and power to respond well.
