Sermon Questions 2025-11-09

Series: The Book of James: Faith in Action
Text: James 4:1-17
Title: Wisdom for Right Relationships

Invited: Share a favourite memory from childhood about friendship.

Loved: Adultery was a serious offense in the Old Testament (Leviticus 20:10), and it still is today. What comes to your mind and heart when you hear the word adultery?

Shaped:

  • What does James mean when he calls his audience “adulterous people” (4:4) in their relationship with God? What were the effects of this “adultery”? How is it possible to be in the world but not “friends” with it in the way James describes (4:4)?
  • How do you respond to the idea that your relationship with Father, Son, and Spirit is like a marriage?
  • Read and discuss James 4:6-8. What does submission and humility and purity look like for you individually, for us as a church? What is the good news here?
  • In this chapter James implies a very close connection between proper love of God and proper love of neighbour. Share, if you can, an example of how renewing your relationship with God made an impact on one of your other relationships (or vice versa).
  • As you think about James’ teaching about right relationships in chapter 4, what most convicts you? What do you need to confess? How do you want the Spirit to help you live differently?

Sent to live like Jesus: What is one thing that the Holy Spirit is saying to you today? Share it with your group or at least one other person, and then pray together for the Spirit’s love and power to respond well.
