Sermon Questions – March 8, 2026
Series: Vice and Virtue (Lent 2026)
Text: Matthew 5:27-30; Song of Songs 2; 8:6-7
Title: Lust and Chastity
Invited: God created us with five senses. Do you have a favourite sense? Pick one sense and talk about how you find delight through that sense.
Loved: Is it easy or hard for you to see sexuality as a gift of God? Why?
Shaped:
- Jesus condemns Lust. What is Lust?
- Discuss: “There is no more pat shibboleth of our time than the idea that what consenting adults do in private is solely their own business. This is false. What we do in private has repercussions on ourselves, and what we are and believe has repercussions on others.” (The Seven Deadly Sins Today, Fairlie 184)
- Another pastor said that “ours is a context in which lust is given pretty much free reign.” How has the vice of Lust affected your life?
- How would you define the virtue of Chastity? Think about how it is “love made right” in our relationships with others, God, and self. What practices help us cultivate Chastity?
- Discuss: “Chastity’s fundamental question is not, ‘How far should I go on a date without crossing some invisible line of “sin”? but rather, ‘How can my life—my thoughts, my choices, my emotional responses, my conversation, and my behavior—make me a person who is best prepared to give and receive love in relationship with others?’” (Glittering Vices, DeYoung)
- How can Faith Church work to cultivate a culture of Chastity for all of us, single or married, young or old?
Sent: How can you cultivate the virtue of Chastity in your life during this Lent? Share one step you will take, and invite your group to support you. Pray for one another.
