Sermon Questions 2025-10-05

Series: The Book of James: Faith in Action
Text: James 1:5-8; 3:13-18
Title: Wisdom from our Generous God

Invited: Who is an “influencer” you take seriously? (whether on social media, podcasting, news, etc; whether about philosophy, economics, theology, fashion, culture, etc.) Why?

Loved: We have all known and loved people we would characterize as wise. Share some stories and consider, why would you call them wise?

Shaped:

  • The book of James is full of echoes of the Old Testament and the teachings/ministry of Jesus. As you read our two short passages from James, what OT or gospel texts do they bring to mind? How might these echoes be helpful in understanding James’ teaching about wisdom?
  • Talk about instances when you’ve asked God for wisdom. Did he provide and, if so, how?
  • How do you keep your eyes and ears on God in the midst of contemporary visual and auditory “noise”? What might you do in the coming week to deepen your focus on God?
  • James makes a stark distinction in 3:13-18 between earthly “wisdom” and wisdom from heaven. Describe the differences. Is his characterization fair? How might this teaching shape how you seek wisdom, or how you live?

Sent to live like Jesus:

  • For whom might God be inviting you to be a person of godly wisdom?
  • Pray for one another to live according to the wisdom of God this week.
