Sermon Questions – April 19, 2026
Series: Songs for the Journey
Text: Matthew 14:22-33
Title: Step Out — Walk on Water
Invited: Trust is a confidence in the ability, truth, or reliability of a person or thing. Talk about the many things and people you need to trust in order to function normally in a typical day.
Loved: Share about a time your trust was broken by a person or thing. (As a group, commit yourselves again, or for the first time, to compassion and confidentiality.)
Shaped:
- In what ways does this Bible story reveal Jesus as a trustworthy Rabbi and Lord? (Think about how this miracle connects Jesus to the rest of God’s Story.)
- Do you believe Jesus (or God or the Holy Spirit) is trustworthy? What has tested your belief in the Triune God’s trustworthiness? What has helped you to grow your trust?
- Listen to the GEMS theme song “Step Out – Walk on Water” by Steven Wierenga (or read the lyrics included below). How does this song encourage you in the Christian journey?
- Pastor Cara focused on the work of God, not Peter, in this story, but many people do highlight Peter as a model for Christian living. This story is often used to inspire courage and “stepping out of the boat,” even attempts to “walk on water.” How does this story inspire you to live differently?
Sent: Pastor Cara and Karli are still receiving song suggestions (and related personal stories) for the spring sermon series. Consider submitting a song using this form.
Song: Step Out – Walk on Water by Steven Wierenga
Who’s this who has the power to still the storms and waves? Who’s this who calls us to him to step out on the seas? Who’s this who has the power to part the seas for us? Who’s this who calls us children when we were far from him?
Though the waters rage, but my heart is still, and the walls seem tall, but my soul’s at peace.
Take heart, step out, embrace the King of Glory! Have faith, trust him, and he will give you courage. For when the rains come and when the winds blow, he will anchor us.
Who’s this who speaks through fire and calls us to himself? Who’s this who stills the Lions and gives us hope in trial? Who’s this who gives us strength to stand up to our fears? Who’s this who shaped the world and knows us as his own?
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, and all your strength and might. Trust the Lord your God!
