Series: Old Stories, New Stories
Text: Matthew 17:1-9
Title: Mountaintop Moments

Invited: If you were to meet with one significant person from your past, who might it be? Who would you want it to be?

Loved: What aspects of your life right now make it challenging to hear, understand, and follow God’s Word?

Shaped:

  • Does the Transfiguration experience happen for Jesus’s sake or the disciples’ sake or all the above? Consider the event’s significance for him / them.
  • As we’ve been asking each week in this series: what does this story reveal about the kingdom of God (God’s reign, God’s character, God’s purposes)?
  • Sometimes in the life of faith we talk about “mountaintop experiences.” What does this mean? How does the Transfiguration story enrich your understanding of this idea? What other mountain-related events can you think of from Scripture to contribute to this concept?
  • Share about a mountaintop moment in your life. What impact did it have on you? For example, think about what it taught you about Father / Son / Spirit. Think about how it shaped your understanding of your identity and mission.
  • Discuss: can we seek mountaintop moments? Should we? What about Peter’s desire to build shelters to prolong the experience (v.4) – is this a good or bad idea for him or for us, and why?
  • How can our Sunday times of worship be mountaintop moments? If you have suggestions to strengthen our worship toward this end, share them with Pastor Cara or Karli, our Worship Coordinator. (Or send someone a note of thanks!)

Sent:

  • What is one thing from this week’s worship / LIFE group that will encourage or strengthen you in the coming week?
  • Close in prayer, praying for our ability to see God’s glory around us and to listen well to Jesus.
