Sermon Questions

“David and the Giant” 1 Samnuel 17 -Pastor Kevin DeRaaf

  1.  Have everyone skim through 1 Samuel 17 and then reflect on these questions:
    1. What parts of the David and Goliath story fascinate, surprise or shock you because you didn’t know or remember they were in there?
    2. How does this reflect Eugene Peterson’t observation that “the David and Goliath story is as important for adults as it ever was for children?”
  2. Read the description of Goliath in vss 4-11.  The sermon today suggested that Goliath represents more than just a large and fierce warrior–he personifies evil.
    1. Do you agree or disagree with this claim?  Why?
    2. How does this interpretation help us understand the gruesome detail about the beheading of Goliath?  (hint:  Genesis 3:14-15)
    3. Read Ephesians 6:10-13.  How does David’s battle with David help us in our own spiritual battles?
  3. David was not surprised by his victory over Goliath. It represents both years of honing his skills as a shepherd and intentionally developing his relationship with God. When his moment came, he slung his stone with all his might, “that the world will know that there is a God.”
    1. How does this encourage and challenge you in your own walk with God?
    2. Is there a personal commitment or act of surrender that you would like to identify in response to this story?  How might you live into that this week?
