Series: Our Anniversary – “Forty … and Then What??”
Genesis 6-9, “Forty Days and Nights (and more) and then … BE FRUITFUL!”
1. Opening: What aspects of God’s creation fill you most with joy? with awe?
- Noah and the Flood is one of the most well-known Bible stories. Skim through Genesis 6-9. What new details do you notice? Does anything surprise you?
3. Compare what God says in Genesis 6:5-7 with God’s promises in Genesis 8:21-22; 9:9-16. Then reflect together on this quote by Walter Brueggemann: “From the perspective of this narrative, there may be death and destruction. Evil has not been eradicated from creation. But we are now assured that these are not rooted in the anger or rejection of God. The relation of creator to creature is no longer in a scheme of retribution. Because of a revolution in the heart of God, that relation is now based on unqualified grace” (Genesis).
4. What does God direct Noah to do after he leaves the ark (Genesis 9:1,7)? How might Noah’s response be shaped by “the revolution in the heart of God” mentioned in Q#3?
5. Does God’s directive to Noah still apply to us today – in what ways? How might the act of serving be part of God’s command to “Be fruitful”?
6. If you served at a worksite today, use the Service Worship questions (provided in May 31 e-news and on printed cards) to reflect on your experience.
